I had a special opportunity to sit in on a meeting of a number of professional adults not long ago and I couldn’t help but notice an interesting sequence of events starting to unfold.

I wish I could say this was the first time, but unfortunately I’ve seen this specific phenomenon happen time-and-time again in various areas of education, community and the work-place.

I’m sure you’ve seen it before.  The meetings where innovation and ingenuity gives way to an ideology of, “We’ve been doing it this way for years.”  Yes, the saying is still true that it’s tough to teach an old dog new tricks.  Hmmm…

I’ve found that the unfortunate truth is, sometimes a person’s biggest shortcoming and challenge to overcome can be a complacent, overconfident, expert-attitude and mentality that can develop under the surface of lofty credentials and years of service in a specific area.  If given any power, this type of person can really stifle a group that’s trying to expand to new levels or move into new territory.

The unfortunate reality is the person may actually be oblivious to the problem because it’s always tougher to see the BIG picture when you’re in a small frame.  I caution you today to please don’t let this be you.  Don’t fall into the trap of what I call the, “Know-it-All Syndrome” created by years of service and lofty credentials.  Commit to always stay green and growing.  Stay innovative and open-minded and never tire of encouraging creativity and ingenuity and welcoming new ideas.

Just as we can’t use old recipe’s to create new meals, we also can’t use old systems to create new ideas.  No anybody that needs to hear this message today?  Hmmm…

Let’s commit to keep our mental immune system high to prevent becoming a victim of this wretched “Know-it-All Syndrome” as we continue in our attempt to make it GREAT.

If you knew you only had one shot to get something right, would you give it your all?  If you knew you wouldn’t have a 2nd chance to make something special happen, would you go all-out?  If you knew that you only had one opportunity to swing the bat with no do-over’s, would you try to knock it out of the park?

Well, SURPRISE!!!  We only get one shot at this “life” thing so we can’t afford to live it playing small as if we get another chance.   We can’t afford to shoot for comfort and mediocrity in hopes that we can just ride out this life under the radar.  We must refuse to accept the idea or notion of turning a blind eye to the possibilities of us doing something BIG and/or socially significant for our fellowmen and women who share this great planet with us.

Dare I say such actions of living small plays into the hands of the one who does not want our lives to matter much.  Our creator has created us for sooooo much more and we’ve been given one life to accomplish BIG things for the benefit of others in honor of He who has created us.

So a good question today is, “What BIG things are you currently working on to make a positive difference in the community and world around you?”  Hmmm…

One of the best things I learned in school and sports as a kid was to do your best in ALL things, and “life” is also on that list of “ALL things.”  Yes, it’s true we only get one time through this “life” thing, so let’s not spend it just trying to make it “good.”  Let’s invest it trying to make it GREAT!

Spare-time” for years has been the deal breaker and disappointment maker for those who foolishly try to squeeze and cram their most important activities of the day into it.  The ever-elusive nature of “spare-time” has rendered it faceless and without adequate definition.  No my friends, “time” is just “time” and no one ever has any more or any less of it to “spare.”

So don’t fall victim to the “spare-time” trap like so many who have come before you.  “Spare-time” is a myth and its existence has yet to be proven.  You have to be willing to make time for those things that are most meaningful and important and then you may find that you will start to reap the benefits and rewards that well-invested time can bring.

Just another little bread crumb of wisdom that can lead you to making it GREAT.  Let’s make it GREAT!
