Would it surprise you if I told you that “resistance” is an indispensable factor of life? Even the greatest of airplanes could never reach for the sky and achieve flight in the absence of the resistance created by the air around it.

Well, just as this is true it’s also true that we humans need a bit of resistance and adversity around us in our lives in order for us to grow and thrive. That’s right my friends, resistance is absolutely necessary for us to achieve anything worthwhile, with emphasis on the words “worthwhile”.

So as a result, if we’re not encountering any resistance on our “worthwhile” journey in this “life” thing, then it may be a good sign that our desired goal just might not be worth our while. Hmmm… Just a short fyi for you today in hopes that you will realize and embrace the role of resistance and continue in your efforts to make this “good” life GREAT!

I was hanging out with my boys last night at the Oildale Sonic eating Subway sandwiches while we waited for our half-priced shakes. Yes that’s right I said “Subway” sandwiches, we think that’s a healthier choice but the Sonic shakes were just a treat.

My boys removed their ball-caps as usual before we prayed a short blessing over our food and then I made a quick whisper about the cigarette smoke that we were having to endure from one of the inconsiderate patrons just because we chose to sit and dine outside at the Sonic.

Minutes later our car-hop waitress showed up at our table with our shakes and then it happened. The long-haired, smoker gentleman put his cigarette out and approached us and said, “Please allow me to take care of that bill for your shakes.” Needless to say I was a bit caught off guard by this gesture so I paused for a second.

He then said, “I feel like God told me to come over and do this for you and your boys after I saw you praying.” I then said, “Well, thank you Lord! I appreciate your kind gesture. I’m not used to being on the receiving end of such gestures, but I do know how to accept them with gratitude when they occur. What’s your name?” “David” he said. “You mean as in ‘The Giant Slayer’?” I asked. “Well, something like that I guess.” He said with a smile.

We expressed our gratitude for the kind gesture and then we exchanged a few minutes of laughter followed by a few more niceties and then wished each other a great day and he went on his way.

Me and my boys spent the next few minutes talking about our experience of being RAK’d (Random-Act-of-Kindness) by David the Giant Slayer. Then I realized that this was the perfect opportunity for me to express to them that it’s not only important to engage in these types of random acts of kindness, but it’s also just as important to be comfortable with receiving them from others who are trying to be a blessing to us. We finished enjoying our smoke-free meal and shakes and topped off our night with a pretty special memory. I think they got the message. 🙂

Please don’t you miss the message today. Leverage this week to RAK a total stranger if you see the opportunity. This is definitely a great week to Make someone else’s day GREAT!

Did you see it? It was all over the news not long ago and it managed to catch the attention of people all over the world. As a result, it was quickly dubbed the Hundred Year Bloom of Death Valley which took place in the winter of 2005.

Death Valley is considered to be one of the hottest most arid places on earth with the second hottest recording on record of 134 degrees Fahrenheit in 1913.

Sitting at over 280 feet below sea level the over 550 square miles of land and mountains have been barren, dry and devoid of anything that resembles life for scores of years.

Records had shown a dismal two inches of rain per year in the arid climate until the winter of the year 2005 when a freak series of uncharacteristic rains happened upon the area and managed to dump over 6.5 inches of water in a short period of time over the entire valley. Then it happened.

Days later, life started to slowly creep up out of the once parched earth and dormant landscape and suddenly there was a yellow and green carpet of wildflowers that appeared virtually out of nowhere causing many to gaze upon the land of Death Valley in awe of the new life.

Could this be true that life springs up from something that had all the makings of something that resembled no life at all? Well the answer was a resounding “YES”.

I truly believe that once again this is just nature’s way of reminding us that the seeds of opportunity are always present just below the surface of our lives and if given the right amount of water and encouragement, the spark of a miracle could happen to a landscape or a life that may have once been dormant and fruitless.

So who are you watering, encouraging and inspiring lately? Hmmm… No need to answer out loud, just make us proud.

Let’s continue to help others Make it GREAT!

Ok my friends, I have a burning question to ask you today before you head into this wonderful weekend. It’s a simple question that I’m not really looking for an answer to but it’s designed to actually make you think.

It’s a question that may even provoke you to ask the personal question of whether or not you should consider making a slight change in your daily actions. So what is this burning question? Well, it’s quite simply, “What are you reading?” Hmmm…

The harsh truth is that there’s no real distinct difference between those who can’t read and those who don’t read because both parties will struggle in the area of real growth over time. Hmmm…

So, what are you reading? Please don’t answer this question here, just make sure you’re crystal clear. Reading to gain knowledge and wisdom really is fundamental to all things great and significant. So let’s do ourselves a favor and make it a regular habit. You’ll be glad you did.
